I Studied Abroad in Africa!: Implicit Sexism
Hi,
I was wondering why you only show women in your blog. Is it not true that their are also men (of all colors) who trivialize Africa and its diversity? Indeed, it was rich men who colonized most of Africa by degrading men and women of all colors. Also, by only showing women, you re-enforce…
When I was in India the most colonialist Americans I was with were men for the most part. I think partially because they had a lot less restrictions than the women did in terms of what they could do/wear/where they could go/who they could talk to, so they were a lot less able to recognize their outsider status as tourists. I remember this one “Buddhist” (lol there aren’t even any Buddhists in South India bro you’re like 1000 miles from where you think you are) being all like “People here are just so *open and friendly*, I try to make sure I *smile and make eye contact* with all of the *colorful beautiful Indian people around me*, you should all be *open to this experience like I am*” and all the women were like “lol yeah if I did that everyone would think I was a whore, also I bet you are making Indian women uncomfortable by doing that”
